“Barbara Fritchie was a famous Frederick resident. Her spunk inspired the Civil War poem by John Greenleaf Whittier that all Frederick schoolchildren memorized. Many Americans know a few of the lines:
“ ... ‘Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, But spare your country’s flag!’ she said.
A shade of sadness, a blush of shame, Over the face of the leader came....
‘Who touches a hair of yon gray head Dies like a dog! March on!’ he said....”
(The leader was Stonewall Jackson. When Winston Churchill visited Frederick in 1943, he stopped at Barbara Fritchie’s house and recited the entire poem from memory.)

Francis Scott Key, the author of our national anthem, is buried in Frederick.

Ellen grew up in historic Frederick, Maryland, and reconnected with her roots at her 50th annual high school class reunion on August 7, 2010.
